Ashley Monroe Reveals Rare Blood Cancer

Ashley Monroe revealed on Tuesday (July 13) that she has been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. In a post on her Instagram account, the member of Pistol Annies stated that she will begin chemotherapy on July 14 to treat waldenstrom macroglobulinemia—a type of cancer that causes severe anemia.

“I start chemo tomorrow,” Monroe wrote on her Instagram post. “Seems like such a negative thing to say. Until I flip that doom feeling on its head and think, wow, I’m thankful I have an illness that is VERY live with-able. I’m thankful there IS a treatment that actually works to fight what is causing harm to my body. THANKFUL for friends and family who have gathered around me praying and sending flowers and letting me lean on them during this super weird chapter of my life.”

The singer-songwriter stated that she trying to maintain a positive attitude. “Seems like such a negative thing to say. Until I flip that doom feeling on its head and think, wow, I’m thankful I have an illness that is VERY live with-able,” she wrote. “I’m thankful there IS a treatment that actually works to fight what is causing harm to my body.”

Monroe also asked fans to hold their “unsolicited advice or medical opinions,” because she trusts the team at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Instead, she asked for prayers. “I do believe in the power of prayer guys,” she said. “I also believe in the power of love healing us all on an even deeper level.”
