Dolly Parton Announces Netflix Series Based On Her Music

on

Dolly Parton announced earlier today that her Dixie Pixie Productions is partnering with Warner Bros. Television to produce a series of films that will premiere on Netflix in 2019

Each of the eight episodes will be based on one of Parton’s songs, with the Emmy award-winning singer-songwriter appearing in select episodes and executive producing the series.

“As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music. I am thrilled to be bringing some of my favorite songs to life with Netflix. We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations, and I want to thank the good folks at Netflix and Warner Bros. TV for their incredible support,” said Parton in the press release.

The project began to be leaked over the weekend when Lily Tomlin accidentally mentioned the shows existence at promotional panel for the Netflix series, Grace and Frankie. According to IndieWire, Tomlin said she’d be delighted to have Parton appear on her show. “But she’s just so busy,” Tomlin said. “She does so many things, and now she has a big show deal herself at Netflix, so I don’t know.”

Tomlin was correct with the fact that Parton has been busy. She recently finished production on the soundtrack for the Jennifer Aniston movie Dumplin’, released an album of children’s music last year and recently donated her 100 millionth children’s book through her Imagination Library project.

Parton is also involved in the upcoming sequel to 1980’s 9 to 5 with Jane Fonda and Tomlin. She said in March that the film’s script should be done by the end of this year, and she will write some music for it.

The Netflix pact is similar to the agreement NBC inked with the country star three years ago for a series of standalone TV movies based on her “songs, stories and inspiring life,” with an option for Parton to appear in them. That deal yielded the movie Coat Of Many Colors, watched by almost 16 million viewers, and its sequel, Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love. The films, also from Dixie Pixie Productions, Magnolia Hill Entertainment and WBTV, aired as NBC holiday specials in 2015 band 2016, respectively.
