Tanya Tucker may have been in the music business for almost 50 years, but she still has a few things to check off her list. Yesterday she was able to check off a Grammy Award win.
Tucker actually won two awards, Best Country Album for While I’m Livin’ and Best Country Song for “Bring My Flowers Now.”
“After almost 50 years in this business, after many dreams, it’s still unbelievable to me that I’d still have a few firsts left. After 14 trips, 14 nominations, this is the first win,” Tucker said upon accepting the trophy for Best Country Song, which she shared with her co-writers Phil and Tim Hanseroth, and Brandi Carlile, who co-produced While I’m Livin‘ with Shooter Jennings.
“This is really Tanya’s moment and this is her song and this song is the story of her life,” Carlile said. “At 61 years old, it’s a woman in country music leading the way.”
“I just want to say that no matter how young or old you are, never stop following your dream,” Tucker said.
Jennings, the son of Waylon Jennings, joined Tucker and Carlile onstage to accept Best Country Album. “Your daddy is up there with mine right now. He’s really proud of us right now,” she said to Jennings, referencing her own father Beau Tucker who died in 2006.
Tucker will bring her Bring My Flowers Tour to the House of Blues in Cleveland on May 20 as part of the CMT: Next Women of Country with special guests Walker County.
Rounding out the off-camera country awards, Willie Nelson’s “Ride Me Back Home,” the title track to his latest album, was named Best Country Solo Performance.
Dan + Shay won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for their single “Speechless,” an award that was presented during the telecast by Shania Twain and Bebe Rexha.
Winners in the country music, Americana/roots, and bluegrass categories were announced during the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
