Jason Aldean Honors Las Vegas Victims and Tom Petty on SNL

on

Jason Aldean made a surprise visit on Saturday Night Live to deliver his message about the events of the past week on a cold open to the show on Saturday (Oct. 7). His appearance on the show came after his headlining set at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 and left 58 people dead and more than 500 injured.

“This week we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history. Like everyone I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal,” Aldean says solemnly in the clip above. “So many people are hurting, they’re our children, parents, brothers, sisters friends — they’re all part of our family.”

“So I want to say to them: We hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure we’re going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way,” Aldean continues. “Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit is unbreakable.”

Aldean finished his statement and then performed Tom Petty’s ” I Won’t Back Down,” offering a sense of hope while also honoring the songs original singer, who died on Oct. 2.

Even though the events in Las Vegas definitely affected the singer, he brought a composure and resilience to the Saturday Night Live stage. It was Aldean’s first public appearance since the tragedy.  He had canceled tour dates through the weekend out of respect for those who died, but will resume touring on Thursday (Oct. 12) in Tulsa, Okla.
