Sunshine in My Pocket

on

Even though the title of this month’s article sounds happy, please bear with me while I share some sad news with you. One of my line dancers passed away peacefully on August 5, 2021 with her family by her side. Throughout her life, Michelle dealt with different health problems with a smile on her face and a positive attitude.

A little over six years ago, Michelle started attending one of my line dance classes when I taught at the Bourbon House in Warren, Ohio. What I remember most about those days is Michelle always enjoyed herself and inspired everyone around her to do the same. Along with her friends, Michelle would recall funny stories about their adventures, making everyone smile and laugh.

Unfortunately, that bar in Warren closed, so I lost touch with Michelle until I started teaching at Rolling Mills in Girard. Whether Michelle was dancing or sitting to take a break, she was always happy. I taught a dance to the song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake; even though the dance was challenging for Michelle, she absolutely loved the song. I originally thought the song title was “Sunshine in My Pocket” and I truly believe that is what helped Michelle through her tough times. She carried a little sunshine with her wherever she went.

Her family, especially her grandchildren, and her friends meant the world to Michelle. I feel enriched that she shared part of her life with me on the dance floor. I hope to carry some sunshine in my pocket and emulate a positive attitude in my line dance classes and my life. I wish her family and friends God’s comfort and peace knowing she touched so many lives with her compassion, humor, and wit.

Here’s the step sheet to the dance I learned at the Dallas Bull and taught at Rolling Mills:

So Just Dance Dance Dance!

Dori Yez teaches Country Line Dancing at these Ohio SCOPE Centers: Howland on Monday evenings (Beginners) and Wednesday evenings (Seasoned Beginners & Intermediate) plus the same level in Cortland on Friday afternoons. Due to room size and attendance, Dori can no longer accept new students in either of her Howland classes. There is a waiting list for a new “true beginner” class. She is accepting additional dancers in the Cortland class.
