Name of Band/Act: Honky Tonk Angels
When did band form: 2015
Members: Charis Thorsell – Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist/Harmonica; Chelsea Bilbrey – Lead Guitar; Sabrina Johnson – Bass and Ellie May Kimevsky – Drums.
About the band: Honky Tonk Angels founding member Charis Thorsell has been playing music across the country with bands and as a solo artist since 2001. She has always wanted an all-girl band and has posted Wanted signs from Waco, Texas and Fort Worth to Akron, Ohio. She would have a girl member here and there, but not a whole band. The story of how they finally formed this all-girl group was a work in progress for a long time. Everything from Craigslist ads to just word of mouth brought all the members together for the first time in the winter of 2016.
The Burbank, Ohio band plays a mix of originals that cover genres including Traditional Country, Red Dirt, Southern Rock and Cowboy music. They have been working on writing more original music and focus on opening for more national shows. The Honky Tonk Angels have been playing shows around the area and continue to book more shows at local venues and festivals. This Saturday, May 27 they will perform at The Vintage barn at the Creekbend Ranch after the Buckin’ Ohio Rodeo in Burbank. The Thorsell Family has long been known for raising bucking bulls and producing bull riding events. Don’t be too surprised to hear a song or two from Charis about her love of the sport.
Why you should see their show: If the fact that they entertain with their own original brand of Outlaw and Traditional Country isn’t enough. The fact that they are an all-girl band should be. Thorsell added, “And, we know how to have fun. I guess we’re not too bad to look at either.” The band doesn’t do a lot of covers, but when they do it’s usually a Thin Lizzy, Willie Nelson, Gary Stewart, Johnny Cash or Creedence Clearwater Revival song. As the Honky Tonk Angels describe it, they are an original outlaw and traditional country band with a cowboy kick and a little rodeo rock n roll.
